The night the network was not breached

It was eleven at night when the call reached Fawzooz. A large organisation, and a tone of voice he knew well: the tone of someone who knows something serious has happened and does not yet know what. The head of technology told him: "A large sum was transferred this evening. Every approval is in order. Every signature is valid. And nobody approved anything."

Fawzooz and his team spent the entire night looking for the breach. The firewall was intact. There was no malware. No accounts had been stolen. There was not one hole in a million lines of logs. By every technical measure they knew how to apply, the system was secure.

At four in the morning they finally understood. The system had not been breached at all; the human being had. A forty-second audio clip in the finance director's voice — his intonation, the small pause he always leaves before a figure, even the short laugh he ends his sentences with — had asked a loyal employee to hurry a transfer through "before the bank closes". The voice had been manufactured out of clips from a public conference that anyone could find online. And the employee had not broken a single procedure. He had followed every one of them faithfully.

Fawzooz had spent fifteen years hardening systems. That night he learned that the real attack surface had never been in the data centre at all. It sits between you and the person you trust, in the one layer no firewall is guarding: cognition.

This is why the first degree does not open with a technical explanation. It opens with a question instead: what do you actually know about this world, and what do you only think you know?
